The end of the 1st semester - The beginning of the 2nd semester
When I started creating my portfolio I didn't want to write about my English level. Not because I was too lazy to do that, but just because I found that quite impossible. There are some sections of my English (listening, reading, writing, spoken production etc.) and I think that my level of English for each section is different. But I have to admit that I can try to classify it.
Listening - B2 - I am able to understand most movies in English so I can enjoy watching the movie. I don't understand everything, especially when actors are talking too fast, but I can understand the context of movies. Sitting in the class I understand almost everything what our teachers say. In my opinion, I am quite good at listening, I understand what people say ( the sound, I can also transcribe what I hear) but the problem is my vocabulary. Maybe it's not a problem, it's something I can improve, because nobody knows all words. Studying at university I improve my vocabulary almost every day, because I have to write many articles, read many topics of English subjects (Grammar and Practical language are propably the most useful subjects for improving my vocabulary). It's quite logical that I'm self-confident about my listetńing, because I really like watching movies and BBC News 24 that is a 24 hour news channel broadcast by the British Broadcasting Corporation and features the latest news from around the world. I'm not so interested in news, but I just love the sound of British English and I really enjoy watching BBC NEWS where the English is pure.
Speaking - B1 - Here wa are ! It's very difficult for me to discuss "Speaking" and decide what level I am. Basically, I am able to express myself properly, but when I have conversation with somebody and I have to react quickly I make mistakes and sometimes even "stupid mistakes". I would need more time to think, but there is no room for it during a conversation. I've noticed that I have problem to make questions. Moreover, it's a bit strange that one day I'm very satisfied with my speaking skills and the other day I'm not able to speak properly so I'm not satisfied with myself, of course. Speaking is just the worst part of my English skills and I'm not surprised, because I don't have much opportunity to make English conversation with somebody.
Writing - B2 - I don't have problem to express myself when I have to write something. In fact, I really like writing, especially essays are my favourite writing style. Sometimes I have to use a dictionary during writing, but not very often. It doesn't mean that my vocabulary is perfect, but I am able to write e.g. an essay with the vocabulary I know.
Reading - B2 - I think that my "passive vocabulary" is not bad so I don't have problem to read a book. Sometimes I have to use a dictionary, but mostly I understand the context of a book quite easily. I have to admit that I'm not able to read e.g. "The Brothers Karamazov" without using a dictionary many times, because there are books which are really difficult to understand when you don't have a very good vocabulary. As for grammar, I think that I'm able to recognise tenses and many other grammar problems which are used in the book I read.
